The Street Uncoiled
Northlight Gallery, Stromness, 24th–27th July 2017
Exhibiting artists: Louise Barrington, Kerrianne Flett, Calum Gillies, Nick Gordon, Mal Grieve, Frances Scott and Sigurd Smith.
The Street Uncoiled presented a series of individual works in celebration of Per Mare, the 200th anniversary of Stromness becoming a Burgh of Barony. Our title, as well as our inspiration, is taken from a George Mackay Brown poem, which was used as our point of departure to create individual responses to the town of Stromness.
Following the success of our inaugural exhibition at the Orkney Museum, Móti gained a number of new members for The Street Uncoiled, forming the beginnings of thewelcoming and vibrant Collective present today.
The streets uncoiled like a sailor’s rope from North to South
And closes swarmed up the side of the hill
Among garden and clouds,
And closes stepped down to the harbour
And the nets and whitemaas.
